Historic low voter turnout in Italy

Over 50% of Italian votes secured by two challenger parties

Preliminary results from Italy's parliamentary election have indicated a historically low voter turnout. As of 7pm CET, only 58.5% of eligible voters had cast their ballots, the lowest turnout in any parliamentary election since 1946. This represents a significant drop from the 73.3% turnout in the 2013 election.

The two leading parties, Movimento 5 Stelle and Partito Democratico, have emerged as the main contenders in the election. Movimento 5 Stelle, a populist anti-establishment party, is projected to win the most votes, while Partito Democratico, a center-left party, is expected to come in second place. Together, these two parties have secured over 50% of the Italian vote, leaving the traditional centre-right and centre-left parties trailing behind.
