Smith was born Vickie Lynn Marshall in Houston, Texas, on November 28, 1967. She began her modeling career in the early 1990s, and she quickly became one of the most famous models in the world. She appeared on the cover of Playboy magazine in 1993, and she was named Playmate of the Year in 1995.

In 2002, Smith married oil tycoon J. Howard Marshall II. Marshall was 89 years old at the time, and Smith was 26. The couple divorced in 2006, and Marshall died the following year.

Smith's death comes just five months after the death of her son, Daniel. Daniel died in September 2006 at the age of 20 from an accidental drug overdose.
