3 Runners Make History at Tennessee's Grueling Barkley Marathons
In a race unlike any other, 17 runners have finished in 40 years – but in 2023, three runners triumphed.
Three Runners Conquering the Barkley Marathons for the First Time in Six Years
This year's race, which concluded last night in Frozen Head State Park, saw a historic moment. For the first time in six years, three runners successfully completed the Barkley Marathons.
Aurélien Sanchez of France, the first to cross the finish line, completed the race in 58 hours, 23 minutes, and 12 seconds. John Kelly of the United States followed closely behind, finishing in 59 hours, 4 minutes, and 30 seconds. The third finisher, Karel Sabbe of Belgium, crossed the line in 60 hours, 13 minutes, and 3 seconds.
The Barkley Marathons is a daunting race that pushes runners to their limits. With over 100 miles of rugged terrain and twice the elevation gain of the Boston Marathon, the race tests both physical and mental endurance.
This year's race saw 40 runners attempt the challenge. Only three emerged victorious, making history in the process.
